‘Who wrote the Iliad’ – A terrific article by Robert Fowler

Honestly, this article speaks for itself. It is a terrific summary of the current approaches to ‘solving’ the problem of defining ‘Homer’. Definitely worth your time to read it.

Check out this post from opɯdʒɯlɯklɑr, Nick Nicholas’s blog (it’s in English despite the weird Turkified Greek title). It’s about a novel by Ismail Kadare in which Lord and Parry feature as characters. I also added as comments an excerpt from Mary Renault’s novel The Praise Singer about the reconstruction of the Iliad in Pisistratos’s day.

    • I <3 Mary Renault, but have to confess to not reading anything outside the Alexander series (actually, I haven't read Funeral Games either). Thank you for the suggestions!! (why won't this damn thesis hurry up and write itself so I can go read more interesting things).

The Praise Singer (about Simonides, her last work) and The Mask of Apollo (Plato vs. Dionysios, seen through the eyes of an Athenian professional actor) are the ones I keep going back to, but they’re all excellent.

Thoughts?
